Tropical Writers Category 5 Anthology Launch.
19th November
Havana Music Café, 113 Lake Street, Cairns.
3.00pm – 5.00pm.
All welcome.
As a category five cyclone bore down on the Far North, these writers and poets were busy writing stories of humour, mystery, murder and pathos. The title symbolically captures the swirling diversity of characters and settings in this book; follow a diver into shark infested waters off Thursday Island, suffer a prank gone wrong, visit a city under water, and meet a troll, a new mum, a chicken-eating python, a murderous pensioner and a lurking swamp monster. You’ll be compelled to read on, to share the evocative settings and gripping conflicts of these distinct characters.
In 2011, Tropical Writers extended an invitation to all regional writers to submit stories and poems to their anthology. The competition was fierce. Many regional writers vied for a place in the book.
President of the group, Carol Libke said, “The two professional external judges, who chose work based on creative merit, said they were pleased with the high standard of the writing in the anthology. She added, the group were thrilled with the record number of submissions received this year. This raised the bar on the quality of writing, and makes Category 5 the best Tropical Writer’s anthology to date.”
The Cairns Tropical Writers Festival
28th – 30th Sept 2012
Setting Your Imagination On Fire in 2012!
There is a rugged independence about the folk of the far north. We brace ourselves for cyclones. We squelch and sweat through wet seasons. And we ward off a plethora of things that bite and sting. It makes us resilient. It feeds our creative minds. And it gives us the spirit to say ‘why not’ to ideas that present a challenge.
It started in 2008 in Cairns when the Tropical Writers emerged from a melee of short stories, poems and two anthologies to launch the far north’s own Writers Festival. Why not we said!
Wanting to be more than just a writers group, but rather light a fire that would engage writers throughout the region, we set to work with nothing but the belief that the idea would be embraced and together we could all make it happen.
The word was out and it rumbled like an electrical storm from the coast to the Tablelands and beyond. A legion of writers, creatives and artisans joined their minds, their combined expertises and their unpaid hours to lay the foundations for our very own Writers Festival in Cairns.
We Set Imaginations on Fire in 2008, in 2010, and we are back to ignite 2012!
Funding permitting we hope to have CoCA as our venue and bring some exciting poets and writers to Cairns. At the heart of the festival will be our own bright stars - the regional writers and poets.
The Biggest Book Club will be back!
With Melinda Norris as project Manager there will be a whole line up of other exciting events to Set Your Imagination on Fire!
Until the official Festival website is up and running - watch this space.
